Jamaica’s electricity era began in 1893 when the Jamaica Electric Light Company—an integrated electric utility—started supplying power from a small coal-fired steam generating plant on Gold Street in Kingston. Thirty-one years later, on May 25, 1923, the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) was established as a legal entity, initially serving 3,928 customers. More than a century later, JPS remains Jamaica’s sole distributor of electricity. The company is engaged in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, and also purchases power from several Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
